5.Cherry Blossom

Nanzenji Temple is a spot where you can enjoy the beauty of nature in every season, and it is especially crowded with tourists during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. Because the temple grounds are so extensive, you can enjoy different scenery in each season, which is part of its charm.

5-1 Nanzenji Temple’s Cherry Blossom Viewing Season and Crowds
The best time to see the cherry blossoms is usually from late March to early April. It may be a few days later than in the city center.

The area around the Sanmon Gate and the Suirakaku Aqueduct is particularly popular, and the collaboration of cherry blossoms and historical buildings is magnificent.

However, this is one of the most crowded times in Kyoto.

If you want to sightsee at a leisurely pace, early morning (around 8:00 AM) or evening is the best time to go.

5-2 Enjoying the Seasons (Fresh Greenery, Autumn Foliage, Snowscapes)
・Fresh Greenery (May-June)
The greenery is vibrant, and there are fewer tourists, creating a calm atmosphere.

・Autumn Foliage (Mid-to-Late November)
The entire temple grounds are dyed in red and yellow, and the Hojo Garden and the area around the Sanmon Gate offer particularly spectacular views.

  • Winter (Snowy Landscape)
The snow-covered Sanmon Gate and Suirakaku Aqueduct are enchanting, making this a time to experience the tranquility of Kyoto.

5-3 Photo Spots and Best Times
The three most popular photo spots at Nanzenji Temple are:

  • Suirokaku Aqueduct
  • Sanmon Gate
  • Hojo Garden

The best time for photography is early morning or evening.
The soft light and shadows are beautiful, and there are fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed shooting experience.

On rainy days, the wet ground creates reflections, resulting in photos with a different atmosphere than usual, so it’s also recommended to aim for rainy days.
